Get the look - bedroom edition
Have you ever wondered what the secret is to a beautifully styled bed? Is it the colour, the texture, or the amount of cushions? Answer: It’s all of the above.
When styling a bed, we always start with a neutral base- there is nothing better than crisp white sheets and duvet to begin the look. Introducing some subtle texture on the duvet cover adds some interest to the base layer – perhaps a waffle weave, or quilted style, or for a more relaxed style, you might consider a linen.
Start by turning down your duvet towards the foot of the bed into a double or triple fold. (The more folds the better for a plush look!) Stylist’s tip- turn your duvet cover around so that the buttons or zipper are facing the bed head – because they will be folded down, you won’t see them and the foot of the bed will achieve a perfect finish too.
Next the cushions… it’s all about adding in the right amount of pattern, texture and block colour to create a harmonious look. On a Double, Queen or King bed, we find that the magic number is five cushions for master bed and three cushions for a guest bedroom.
For a more formal look, work with a symmetrical layout. Starting with your white pillows against the bed head, and add some decorative cushions in front. - two slightly patterned cushions, two plain or textured cushions, and finish with a complimenting feature cushion at the front.
If a more relaxed style suits you better, work with the same principles of mixed pattern, plain, textured and feature cushion, always in odd numbers.
With both looks, it’s also nice to mix the shape and size of the cushions for added interest.
For a single bed, we find that three cushions works perfectly, again combining a patterned, plain or textured cushion and a using a feature cushion at the front – an alternate shape always works well here too.
If you're feeling bold and confident in bed styling, you could even opt for using four cushions instead of the recommended three or five. With this look, the key is to use cushions of varying sizes and shapes. We highly recommend using one textured cushion, one repetitively patterned cushion, one bold patterned cushion, and one rectangular cushion. We've attached a photo below of this style, where our Director Beth has used this look in one of her guest bedrooms at home. You'll notice her very cheeky Cocker Spaniel, George, approves the styling here.
The other secret to a plush bed is the layering at the foot. We love throw rugs!! Complimenting the colours of the decorative cushions is key to a harmonious design, so pick a prominent tone from your cushion and replicate this in the throw rug.
For an extra element of luxury, use a second throw, contrasting the texture of the first. In this case, keep the base layer running flat along the width of the bed to bring colour- you might like to use a quilted coverlet , or larger blanket that drapes well over the side. Tuck this right up underneath the folded duvet, and add the second, smaller throw on top. Again, draping this widthways along the bed will create a clean and symmetrical look. We love to enhance the texture by pinching up the top throw to create a subtle rippled effect. See picture below of the ‘double throw’ effect.
Artwork is also a fantastic way to add personality to a bedroom. If you have no bedhead, or a low bedhead, we suggest placing an artwork directly above the bed. If you already have a gorgeous bedhead, we'd recommend placing the artwork on the next largest wall within the bedroom, or above a chest of drawers/ console table.
Complete the look with some beautiful lamps, plus accessories and greenery on the bedsides!
