First Impressions Count!
Every one knows that making a first impression is important and when it comes to your home it is no different!
The front entrance is the first space in your home that everyone sees – your friends, family, strangers and even the postman! It can say a lot about you; is it light, bright and welcoming, super slick and stylish or subtle and cosy with soft ambient lighting? Is there a console table displaying favourite family photos and unique accessories or is there an eye catching artwork hanging on the wall?
The size of your entry will determine if you can fit a furniture piece or whether to keep it simple with an art piece.
If you have the luxury of a generous size entry, a console table is a great way to fill the space and give your visitors a taste of your interior style through your displayed accessories, whether it be a statement vase, framed family photograph or a beautiful bunch of flowers. If your console table has a shelf at the bottom, it is the perfect spot to place a couple of woven baskets or a stack of coffee table books on top of the shelf. Console tables are also perfect for storing those items that are hard to find a home for such as keys, wallets or sunglasses.
Adding a pot plant such as a fiddle leaf fig next to your console table will brighten up the entry and make it pop!
When styling a home we either hang a mirror or an artwork above a console table. The advantage of having a mirror is that it will make the entry feel more spacious and you can have a quick check of your hair or makeup before you race out of the door. One thing to remember though- don’t place a mirror opposite the front door, it’s not good for the Feng Shui of the home. Opting for an art piece instead provides an opportunity to inject some colour into your entry way.
“How do I know if I have enough room for a console table?” I hear you ask! Console tables are usually approximately 400mm deep. We like to have a minimum walkway width of 1 meter from the front of the console table to the opposite wall. Any less than this will make the entry feel too tight.
If you have a small entry and not enough room for furniture, don’t fret! Artworks come in all shapes, sizes and colours and are the perfect and simple way to create a statement. Using a mirror instead of an artwork will make your entry look wider.
Let’s not forget the ceiling! If you are lucky enough to have high ceilings in your home, use it to your advantage by hanging a striking pendant light or incorporating a feature ceiling detail like a coffer ceiling.
There are so many ways to create an impact with your entry, it doesn’t have to be boring. Remember first impressions do count!
