Outdoor living! – The Little Styling Co.

Outdoor entertainment areas and settings can add value to your home as they can easily be used as an additional extension off your living space of your home.

A common question that first needs to be answered is how do you intend to use the outdoor space? Is feasting around a big table with a group of friends your vibe or is curling up on a sofa in the afternoon sun reading a magazine your type of thing. Whether it’s a dining setting or sofa setting there is a number of considerations that need to be considered. Positioning, colour, size and finishes.

If your outdoor area is a continual flow from your internal dining room we always try and avoid placing yet another dining table in the same area. We would instead opt for selecting a sofa setting for this space. This will offer a variety of seating options for your guests whilst entertaining with style. We would also swap the combination if the furniture was reversed; for instance if you had an outdoor area off your lounge room we would place a dining table outside. Your space will be well utilised and functional for any form of entertaining and it’s a great way to make a connection with the inside and outside of your spaces so they flow seamlessly. If you only have a small entertaining area you can still dress up your space with a small balcony setting either dining or occasional chairs and a feature pot plant (we can never say no to a pop of greenery!). Consider what furniture setting would be more practical for you and your household.

Before you make your purchase be sure to measure your space. There’s nothing worse than having an oversize outdoor setting on your balcony or alfresco area and all your guests struggle to move around the space. It’s better to have a smaller setting so your space can be better utilised when entertaining.

When it comes to choosing the colour and texture, try selecting an outdoor set that reflects the interior furniture style. For instance all your interior furniture pieces may be of white and oak furniture, continue that look for the exterior selections. This will create "flow" between the interior and exterior of the home. There is a vast amount of variety on the outdoor furniture market these days that you don’t just have to stick with wooden teak outdoor pieces. You can even continue the same pop of colour that you have styled your home with internally and introduce some outdoor cushions and even adding a outdoor rug for that extra bit of luxury.
